4-6 Nov: film fun up a tower in Somerset!
Led by Dr Joanna Mayes and James Holcombe

Tuesday November 4th - Thursday November 6th, 2025

So….we had an idea!! 💡 sounds like people are busy/cash pressed so looked for a simpler/easy to access and more affordable option for November. Ta da! The Tower was birthed :).
I found this amazing space; a crazy tower need Taunton, which has a surprising number of beds plus space for vans and camping (with permission to cram indoors if the weather changes).
If we have enough of us (need around 10) then we can run it for:
£220 no accom
£260 camp/van
£295 for a bed in a shared room.

We’ve decided that our first Deep Dive will be all about the Tower (as it’s so amazing) - how to make use of what we have used before, plus some additional in camera jiggery pokery for both 16mm and 8mm. The residency question is: How can we use alternative techniques - both in camera and processing - to share a feeling/stories of and from a place?

2 days of eating, sleeping and breathing film! In a tower!! Go on, you know you want to :) :). Designed so you can travel on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon meaning only 3 days away.

Go on… 2 days out of everyday life and a chance to fully immerse and play with film together in a, let’s face it, a pretty fabulous and slightly bonkers location! We’re really up for this - hope you are too.

As this is a special place we will be thinking about how to use alternative techniques - low light, double exposure, single frame, filters, time lapse etc - to share experiences. Alternative film processing will feature!!

Tuesday 4th to Thursday 6th November :)

More About The 2 Day Deep Dive
We will consider extended of artisanal 16mm and 8mm film production, learning from Joanna and James’s filmmaking practices, developed over the last 20 years, which incorporate a kitchen-friendly and eco-aware approach to working with photochemical film. We will share ways in which you can source affordable and recycled film making materials, working without a formal darkroom and how to align our film making practice with contemporary climate and waste-aware concerns. The overview aim of St Ives FIlm is that we increase an awareness of the artisanal film production and ways in which to continue our practice in an affordable and eco-aware way.

Participants will be encouraged to share skills and learn from each other. This opportunity, whilst having a relaxed approach, is designed to be fully immersive as we try out different ideas and techniques. There will still be plenty of time for conversation and the sharing of experiences of image-making and how this relates to the development of an photochemical moving image practice. The aim of the Deep Dive is to have a chance to put our experimental filmmaking skills into practice and hopefully learn a few more!

Together We Will Enjoy:
  • Hands-on 16mm Bolex camera work, including multiple exposures and consideration of approaches to more experimental ways of working.
  • Considering the benefits of ‘sketching’ on the simpler and more affordable Standard 8 Bolex cameras
  • For this workshop we are focusing on how to share an experience of being in a place through experimental filmmaking techniques and alternative processing.
  • We will be sharing eco-conscious film developing methods - caffenol and/or locally foraged plant materials.
  • Using Cameraless film production techniques and phytograms using local plants - mixing and matching with standard filming!
  • Sociable evenings sharing film with eachother - gaining inspiration from films and sharing our own practice
  • A chance to explore this amazing location - nestled in woodland, away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives :)

Why Join?
DEEP DIVE: THE CONCEPT
The idea of the Deep Dive came in response to people from our 4 day workshops wanting a follow-up and/or time to focus on camera and processing skills. While this opportunity was designed for previous participants, others with some experience of analogue film (or happy to be thrown in the deep end) are also welcome!
📍 Location: The Tower, Combe Florey TA4 3JF
📅 Dates: Tuesday November 4th - Thursday November 6th, 2025 1pm on Tuesday to 1pn on Thursday

Practicalities
The Tower, near Taunton, has a surprising number of beds plus space for vans and camping (with permission to cram indoors if the weather changes).
If we have enough of us (need around 10) then we can run it for:
£220 no accom (and source your own nearby)
£260 camp/van
£295 for a bed in a shared room.

Nearest rail station is Taunton and it’s a short taxi ride which gets pretty cheap if we share.
We’ll make food together so that saves on cash, as well as having more time to make work, late shoots etc.

All filmmaking equipment is included (but please feel free to bring your own, with film); workshop film stock and digitisation is included.
